Making the most of the space You have

We live in a day where loving the spaces in which we live, work and play can be challenging. Everywhere we look, there are instant HGTV makeovers, instagram feeds full of gorgeous homes and Pinterest pages of picturesque house after house after house. It’s not hard to find spaces that feel more beautiful, more done and more functional than the ones we call our own. So, how do we stop the comparison traps, evaluate what we DO have, make it work AND look its best?

We start by stopping the mental cycle of comparison that can be so discouraging. If we can focus on what we DO have and take steps to make it work that much better for us and our people, we will be well on our way to intentionally living a more beautiful life.

Below are 3 small steps to stop comparing and start loving the space you’re in:

Take a social media break

We all know that social media can serve an awesome purpose but if we are not careful about what we are looking at and when, we will get sucked into focusing our energy in all the WRONG places. The time and the output that you give to looking at other people’s things should, instead, be spent cultivating your own space. So, give yourself a specific time frame to any and all social pursuing and give it a purpose. Facebook? Take 10 minutes to catch up with friends and family and then off it goes. Pinterest? Spend 30 minutes looking for specific inspiration for your next front door redo. Instagram? Take 5 minutes and search for helpful tools and solid recommendations to help you make more informed and thoughtful decisions: Should I go with a semi or high-gloss paint?

Create a gratitude journal about your home

For one month, list out at least one thing each and every day that you love about your current space. The more we choose to focus on what we DO have, the more we will forget about what we DON’T have. Take it one step further and have your family do the same thing! Gratitude and positive outlook is contagious so why not cultivate this in your home for everyone who lives there? It’s also very cool to hear what little ones love most about their spaces. Getting others perspectives will only enhance your awareness of how truly great what you have already is!

Make a small list of projects you want to tackle.

And make sure they are doable. THEN DO ONE! Take it one at a time and try to finish them to completion. Once you have a new favorite corner in your home or a refreshing front door to come home to, you’ll only want to keep improving the space you have. Before long, you’ll find yourself feeling inspired and energized, and also grateful just to be in the space you created for yourself and your loved ones.
